NHS Wales Bank Holiday Pay Calculator: Calculate Your Pay for Working a Bank Holiday

Working a bank holiday can mean more money in your payslip, but working out exactly how much you should receive is not always straightforward.

For NHS Wales staff, bank holiday pay is linked to the NHS Agenda for Change terms and conditions. Your pay can depend on your NHS pay band, basic hourly rate and whether the hours you work fall within the rules for unsocial hours payments.

To make things easier, we have created an NHS Wales Bank Holiday Pay Calculator that can help you estimate what you could earn when working a bank holiday.

How does NHS bank holiday pay work in Wales?

NHS Wales provides services around the clock, meaning many staff are required to work evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays.

Under the NHS Agenda for Change arrangements, qualifying staff working during public holidays can receive an unsocial hours enhancement in addition to their basic pay. NHS Wales confirms that Agenda for Change is the national pay system used for directly employed NHS staff, with additional payments designed to recognise out-of-hours and shift working.

This is why working a bank holiday can produce a significantly higher hourly payment than working a standard weekday shift.

However, the exact amount depends on your circumstances.

What is the NHS Wales bank holiday pay rate?

The NHS Terms and Conditions of Service include specific unsocial hours arrangements for Wales.

For staff covered by the relevant Agenda for Change arrangements, the enhanced rate for Sundays and public holidays varies according to pay band. The NHS handbook sets out different percentages for different bands.

For example, the applicable enhancement can be substantially higher than the normal hourly rate for qualifying public holiday hours.

This means that an NHS worker on one pay band may receive a different bank holiday enhancement from someone working in another band.

This is one of the reasons a simple "double pay" assumption does not always give you the correct answer.

Is NHS bank holiday pay double time in Wales?

This is one of the most common questions asked by NHS employees.

The answer is not necessarily.

Bank holiday payments under Agenda for Change depend on the applicable pay band and the current NHS terms and conditions. Different bands can have different unsocial hours percentages.

The NHS Terms and Conditions handbook specifically states that unsocial hours payments for Sundays and public holidays are calculated according to the applicable arrangements and pay band.

So if you are trying to work out your expected bank holiday earnings, it is better to calculate the payment using your actual NHS band and hourly rate rather than simply assuming that you will receive double pay.

How can I calculate NHS Wales bank holiday pay?

The easiest way is to use an NHS Wales bank holiday pay calculator.

Our calculator is designed to make the calculation simpler by allowing you to enter the relevant information and estimate your bank holiday earnings.

You can use it as a quick way of checking the potential value of a bank holiday shift before you work it.

Example of NHS bank holiday pay

Imagine an NHS employee has a basic hourly rate of £20 and works qualifying hours on a public holiday.

If the applicable bank holiday enhancement were 60%, the calculation would be:

£20 × 1.60 = £32 per hour

A 12-hour shift would then produce:

£32 × 12 = £384

This is only an illustration. Your actual NHS Wales bank holiday payment will depend on your pay band, the applicable NHS terms and conditions, the hours worked and your individual circumstances.

The current NHS pay arrangements for 2026/27 took effect from 1 April 2026, with the Welsh Government pay circular confirming a 3.3% increase to the relevant Agenda for Change pay scales.

Does your NHS pay band affect bank holiday pay?

Yes.

Your NHS pay band is important because the Agenda for Change system uses different unsocial hours enhancement rates for different bands.

The NHS Terms and Conditions handbook sets out the relevant rates and explains that unsocial hours payments are calculated using basic salary, subject to the rules in the handbook.

This means a Band 2 employee and a Band 6 employee working the same number of hours on a bank holiday may not receive exactly the same enhanced payment.

Your basic hourly rate is therefore an important part of the calculation.

What happens if I work a night shift on a bank holiday?

Night shifts can make NHS pay calculations more complicated.

The NHS rules distinguish between different types of unsocial hours, including evenings, nights, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

There are also rules concerning continuous night or evening shifts. The handbook explains that, in certain circumstances, the applicable enhancement can apply to the whole shift when more than half of the shift falls within the relevant unsocial hours period.

If your shift crosses midnight or spans different types of unsocial hours, you should therefore avoid assuming that every hour will automatically receive the same enhancement.

Do part-time NHS staff receive bank holiday pay enhancements?

Part-time staff can also qualify for unsocial hours payments when they work eligible hours.

The NHS Terms and Conditions handbook specifically states that staff working less than 37.5 hours a week can be eligible for unsocial hours payments.

However, the calculation of annual leave and general public holidays can be different from simply calculating an enhanced hourly rate.

This is particularly important for NHS staff who work variable hours or have changing shift patterns.

What bank holidays are recognised by NHS Wales?

NHS Wales staff working under Agenda for Change arrangements are entitled to the recognised general and public holidays under their terms and conditions.

These include holidays such as Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, the May bank holiday, the Spring bank holiday and the August bank holiday. Public Health Wales guidance, for example, identifies eight bank holidays for Agenda for Change staff.

Because bank holidays can fall on different dates each year, it is worth checking the calendar when planning shifts and calculating expected earnings.

NHS Wales bank holiday pay in 2026

NHS pay rates can change, so older calculators and articles may no longer give an accurate estimate.

For 2026/27, NHS Wales confirmed a 3.3% increase to the Agenda for Change pay scales from 1 April 2026.

The NHS Terms and Conditions handbook is also periodically amended. NHS Employers published Amendment number 62 in June 2026, including changes relating to unsocial hours payments in Wales.

This is why it is important to use up-to-date information when estimating NHS pay.

Why use an NHS Wales bank holiday pay calculator?

Calculating enhanced NHS pay manually can be confusing, especially when you are working shifts that cross different periods.

A calculator gives you a quick estimate without having to work through the entire NHS handbook.

Our NHS Wales Bank Holiday Pay Calculator is particularly useful if you want to:

Check how much you could earn from a bank holiday shift

Estimate your enhanced hourly rate

Compare different shift lengths

Understand the potential value of working a public holiday

Check your expected earnings before looking at your payslip

Check your payslip carefully

A calculator should be treated as an estimate rather than a replacement for your employer's payroll system.

Your actual payment can depend on your employment contract, pay band, working pattern, hours, overtime arrangements and the NHS terms and conditions applicable to you.

If the amount on your payslip appears significantly different from what you expected, your payroll or HR department should be able to explain how the payment was calculated.

The official NHS Terms and Conditions of Service handbook remains the best source for the contractual rules.

For many NHS Wales employees, working a bank holiday can be financially worthwhile because qualifying public holiday hours can attract an unsocial hours enhancement.

But working out the exact amount is not always as simple as saying "bank holiday means double pay". The applicable enhancement depends on the NHS rules, pay band and circumstances of the shift.

If you are planning to work a bank holiday and want a quick estimate of your potential earnings, try our NHS Wales Bank Holiday Pay Calculator.
